Bolinao. Odoric of Pordenone, an Italian and Franciscan friar and missionary explorer, is heartily believed by many Pangasinenses to have celebrated the first mass in Pangasinan in around 1324 that would have predated the mass held in 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan.

How Limasawa got its name? Rajah Kolambu, the Rajah of the Island has 5 wives, that is why the place was called Limasawa which means lima asawa (5 wives).
Balangay was one of the first native words the Europeans learned in the Philippines. Spanish chronicler, Pigafetta who was with Ferdinand Magellan when setting foot in the country (1521) called the native boats balangai or balanghai.
The first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday. Today, this site is widely believed by many historians and the government to be Limasawa at the tip of Southern Leyte, though this was contested by some who assert that the first mass was instead held at Masao, Butuan.
Easter Sunday Mass
Today the island is popularly known as “Limasawa” although some elderly citizens prefer to call it “Mazaua”. Limasawa was created into an independent municipality on June 11, 1978 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1549.
One was the ” king” of Mazaua – who later guided the Magellan expedition to Cebu. The other was a relative ( ” one of hi s brothers” as Pigafetta says) , namely the king or rajah of Butuan. Of this latter individual , Pigafetta says that he was “the finest looking man” that he had seen in those parts.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) settled the controversy over the official site of the 1521 Easter Sunday Mass in the country by favoring Limasawa in Southern Leyte instead of Masao in Butuan City.

The chronicle of Pigafetta was one of the most cited documents by historians who wished to study the precolonial Philippines. As one of the ealiest written accounts, Pigafetta was seen as a credible source for a period, which was prior unchronicled and undocumented.
Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian scholar and explorer. He joined the expedition to the Spice Islands led by explorer Ferdinand Magellan under the flag of King Charles I of Spain and after Magellan’s death in the Philippine Islands, the subsequent voyage around the world.
The most complete and reliable account of the Magellan expedition into Philippine shores in 1521 is that of Antonio Pigafetta which is deemed as the only credible primary source of reports on the celebration of the first Christian Mass on Philippine soil.
