There was no legal requirement for SN’s on shotguns before the Gun Control Act of 1968. Stevens, Savage, and many others will be found with no serial numbers. It is perfectly legal.
The company was formed in the late 1800s in Ithaca. It has changed ownership several times over the years., In 1987, the company’s gun-making operations were moved to King Ferry in Cayuga County. The King Ferry plant was shut down in 2005. The company’s headquarters are currently in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
Ithaca’s are made of steel not aluminum and plastic. They cost more because they take more machining to make. Parts machined vs stamped parts cost more.
Ithaca Gun Company is still all-American made.
Given its simplicity in functionality and its inherent reliability, if you’re beginning to explore the shotgun sports, this is one shotgun model well worth your consideration. The Model 37 is most popular in its 12-gauge version. They’re also available in 20-gauge and 28-gauge.
A: On the Model 37®, the serial number is located on the bottom right side of the receiver or on earlier models the chamber end of the receiver between the magazine and barrel.
Shotgun Life recently enjoyed the privilege of spending a full day at Ithaca talking with nearly everyone in the company. We spoke with the men who made the barrels, the receivers and the stocks. We spent time with management. In 1945, Ithaca had built a one-of-a-kind 12-gauge, over/under prototype.

While Ithaca did produce some shotguns for military use during the war, they also produced M1911 pistols and M3 submachine guns. After World War II, Ithaca resumed production of the Model 37. The Ithaca 37 is the only pre–World War II shotgun still in production.
Please explain about the bolt stop recess in the Ithaca Model 37. The Ithaca has a slide stop (part no. 27), but I have never heard of a “bolt stop”. Also please note the Ithaca does not “slam fire”, the hammer is released by the second sear after the breach is in fully locked!
Model 37 is a conventional, manually operated pump action shotgun. It uses tubular underbarrel magazine that can hold 4 rounds in standard configuration.
View Full Version : Is slam fire legal? Yes it is legal. IMO its a stupid thing to do though because you are modifying the stock trigger group to function in a manner that the manufacturere expressly designed it not to do. Its also not the safest thing in the world to do either.
Someone has a misunderstanding of what slam fire means. No it isn’t something easily done to your shotgun. It was designed so you must release the trigger between firing and re chambering before re pulling the trigger to fire the gun again.
It’s not slam firing, it’s pump firing. The 870 has a trigger disconnector that prevents pump firing. You need to pull the trigger for each shot.
A slamfire occurs when the firing pin protrudes from the breechblock. When the bolt or slide slams home on a live round, the firing pin fires the round. All newer shotguns have a trigger disconnector that prevents slamfires. Older guns, like the Ithaca 37 and Winchester 97, do not.
Because there is no reason for them to be illegal. A shotgun that is designed to fire open breach, fires essentially the same rate as any other shotgun.
You are looking for shotguns in which there is no disconnector on the trigger. Winchester 97 and Model 12’s and Ithaca 37’s would be a couple. FlippinHippie, AzShooter1, Merle1 and 4 others like this.
