A transformer designed to increase the voltage from primary to secondary is called a step-up transformer. A transformer designed to reduce the voltage from primary to secondary is called a step-down transformer.
To conduct this test, the transformer must be completely disconnected, and you need to set the multimeter to read resistance in ohms (Ω). Touch the meter leads to the two input terminals of the primary coil (they may be marked H1 and H2) and check the reading.
The test equipment is calibrated to read in Megohm and commonly know as a HV Megger. Typical maximum test set voltage values may be 1kV, 5kV or 15kV. The 30kV Megger is also available….Meggering (insulation resistance testing) of dry-type power transformer.
Winding Insulation Class, kV | Insulation Resistance, MΩ* |
---|---|
1.2 | 600 |
2.5 | 1000 |
5.0 | 1500 |
8.7 | 2000 |
A magnetized CT can be caused by a lightning strike, ground fault, or open circuiting a CT. With this shoebox size device, you simply attach the duckbill connector to the phase of the test switch you want to demagnetize, turn the unit on, press the Demag button, and in less than 1 minute your CT will be demagnetized.
The only way to remove this remanence is by degaussing the CT. Degaussing can be done by applying primary rated current and a variable load to the CT secondary terminals. Start the load at a high resistance to cause the CT to saturate in both the positive and negative directions.
The term demagnetizing field reflects its tendency to act on the magnetization so as to reduce the total magnetic moment. It gives rise to shape anisotropy in ferromagnets with a single magnetic domain and to magnetic domains in larger ferromagnets.
Ferromagnetic materials can be demagnetized by the following three methods:
Divided Touch Method: Take another two strong permanent magnets and bring their opposite poles and touch them in the middle of the rod and gently rub the two magnets on the rod moving away from each other towards the end. When ends are reached lift away the magnets and bring back them again at the starting position.
