The 429 is, IMHO, the best, least compromised Ford engine ever. In terms of latent potential, its also the best. It never caught on becasue of CAFE. Ratcheting 22 to 27.5 mpg fleet averages were why Foxes ended up with 255 4.2 liter engines from 1980 to 1982.

The racing engine dubbed the Boss 429, was an aluminum hemi-head engine design with gigantic ports and valves for high rpm use. The high-torque 429 engine was used in the big Fords and Thunderbirds starting in 1968, then in 1970 a high-performance version was used in the Ford Torinos and Mustangs.
Ford made 499 Boss 429s in 1970. Five new exterior colors were available: Grabber Orange, Grabber Green, Grabber Blue, Calypso Coral, and Pastel Blue; and the interior was available in black or white and black.
A 429 Boss used a specific block. Some of t he push rods on an original Boss head would hit the side of the regular 429 block in the lifter valley. There are few if any original heads to be had. As andrewmp6 said Jon Kaase builds every thing for the Boss 429, and can be used on any 429, 460 or aftermarket block.
The only way to ID a true Boss 429 block is by the oil return holes cast into the block. If they are not there, the oil will not return from the Boss 429 heads.
