Knowing your audience helps you to make decisions about what information you should include, how you should arrange that information, and what kind of supporting details will be necessary for the reader to understand what you are presenting. It also influences the tone and structure of the document.
The purpose of your paper is the reason you are writing your paper (convince, inform, instruct, analyze, review, etc). The audience of your paper are those who will read what you write.
What is audience? The audience is who the text is aimed at – who the reader is. For instance, an advert for a car showing businessmen tells us who it’s aimed at. You can pick up clues from the illustrations, the writing, the tone and the language about who the intended audience is.
A target audience is the person or group of people a piece of writing is intended to reach. In other words, it is important for a writer to know who will be reading his or her writing. This audience is the person or group of people the writer is aiming for or trying to reach.
Your target audience is the one most likely to have interest in your brand. This is the group most likely to engage your site, share your content, and buy your product or service. Reaching 10,000 people in your target audience will develop more sales than reaching 20,000 out of it.
Since it’s impossible to reach everyone at once, narrowing your focus to a core audience helps you to develop an effective marketing strategy. It helps your company craft a messaging strategy that appeals directly to the type of consumers who are more likely to convert into customers.
Your target audience refers to the specific group of consumers most likely to want your product or service, and therefore, the group of people who should see your ad campaigns. Target audience may be dictated by age, gender, income, location, interests or a myriad of other factors.
Key Points Knowing your audience —their general age, gender, education level, religion, language, culture, and group membership—is the single most important aspect of developing your speech.
When people become audience members in a speech situation, they bring with them expectations about the occasion, topic, and speaker. Violating audience expectations can have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the speech.
If you have an audience with someone important, you have a formal meeting with them.
Possibly the two most important things a writer must consider are audience and purpose. In this sense, audience and purpose work in two directions: A writer’s audience will influence his purpose, while his purpose will influence which audience the writer chooses to address. The terms are symbiotic.
Often, texts have more than one purpose. Texts also have an intended audience – the people (or person) that the writer hopes will read the text. Identifying the purpose and audience of a text will help you to understand it better. This understanding of how texts work will also help you improve your writing skills.
