The Question & Answer (Q&A) Knowledge Managenet
The Internet has many places to ask questions about anything imaginable and find past answers on almost everything.
In the bibliography, put the ancient author’s name first, as above. Remember, in your text you should use the simple form ‘Thucydides 4. 4’ whenever possible. For the correct format when using a sourcebook, see above, under ‘When one author cites another (ancient or modern)’.
Author’s Last Name, First Name. “Title of Primary Source Document: Subtitle.” Year of creation. Title of Website, Publisher of Website, Publication Date, URL. Accessed Day Month Year site was visited..
MLA (7th ed.) Ovid, , and Charles Martin. Metamorphoses. New York: W.W. Norton & Co, 2004.
For every in-text citation in your paper, there must be a corresponding entry in your reference list. APA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14).
Always use parenthetical citation. For references to Antigone, put abbreviated name of play (Ant.) in parentheses with page number. For references to Inherit the Wind, use authors’ names and page number in parentheses (Lawrence and Lee 25).
When citing prose plays, use the page number first, followed by a semicolon and then other identifying information (e.g. Miller 9; Act 1). When citing verse plays with line numbers provided, use those instead of page numbers, separating division numbers with a period (see example above)..
To cite a specific quotation from a play in MLA style, place the quotation in quotation marks (using slashes to indicate line breaks) and end with a parenthetical citation of author, name of play, and then page/act (for prose plays) or act/scene/line(s) (for verse).
When citing a play with numbered lines, the MLA parenthetical citation should include the author name and the act, scene and line number(s). If the lines are not numbered, include the page number instead.
General information about MLA and Shakespeare
MLA (7th ed.) Shakespeare, William, and G B. Harrison. The Tragedy of Macbeth. Harmondsworth, Eng.: Penguin Books, 1968.
Films or Movies List films by their title. Include the name of the director, the film studio or distributor, and the release year. If relevant, list performer names after the director’s name.
When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998), and a complete reference should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
Revised on March 4, 2021. An MLA website citation includes the author’s name, the title of the page (in quotation marks), the name of the website (in italics), the publication date, and the URL (without “https://”).
